Finding Your Purpose: How Small Signs Can Reveal You're on the Right Path

Have you ever felt like your life wasn't unfolding according to plan, yet somehow everything still felt right?

Many people searching for their purpose expect clarity to arrive all at once. They imagine a single breakthrough moment that reveals exactly what they are meant to do. In reality, discovering your purpose is often much quieter. It happens through everyday experiences, emotional awareness, and recognizing patterns that point you toward a life that feels authentic.

I've learned that nothing has gone the way I expected, yet everything seems to be leading me exactly where I need to be.

When Life Doesn't Go According to Plan

Recently, I made the decision to move back to my hometown with a clear mission: to build Colbert's Corner Coaching & Consulting and help bring practical mental health skills, emotional awareness, and personal growth resources to my community.

Like many entrepreneurs, I also needed financial stability while growing my business. I accepted a job that, on the surface, simply provided income.

What I didn't expect was how closely that position aligned with my long-term purpose.

Every day, I'm developing marketing skills, building professional relationships, expanding my network, and finding opportunities to share the work I'm passionate about. What initially felt like a temporary step has become an important part of the journey.

Sometimes alignment doesn't look like arriving at your destination.

Sometimes it looks like preparing you for it.

Emotional Awareness Helps You Recognize Alignment

One of the core ideas behind emotional navigation is learning to pay attention to your internal experience instead of rushing past it.

Our emotions often provide valuable information about whether we're moving toward or away from a life that reflects our values.

When we slow down and become more aware of our experiences, we begin noticing patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Recently, I experienced several moments that reminded me of this.

Small Signs Can Have Deep Personal Meaning

While pet sitting for my cousin, I decided to work out in the gym above their garage.

On the treadmill were walking poles used for Nordic walking, sometimes referred to as the "Viking march."

Not long ago, I discovered through my family history that I'm primarily Scandinavian by descent. Since learning more about Scandinavian culture and values, I've found myself deeply resonating with many aspects of that heritage. Seeing those walking poles felt like another reminder of a part of myself I continue to explore.

Then I noticed something even more unexpected.

An old decorative slot machine displayed my name above the image of a dolphin.

Most people would have walked right past it.

For me, it immediately brought back a childhood dream.

Growing up, I wanted to become a dolphin trainer.

Although my career goals changed over the years, the deeper desire remained the same: to dedicate my life to meaningful work that helps others.

Today, that purpose has evolved into coaching, teaching emotional awareness, and helping people better understand themselves.

The dolphin no longer represents a career I didn't pursue.

It represents a lifelong commitment to purpose.

Finding Purpose Through Self-Reflection

Were these experiences coincidences?

Maybe.

Were they meaningful to me?

Absolutely.

Meaning is personal.

Self-reflection allows us to connect experiences, emotions, and memories into a larger understanding of who we are becoming.

The more we recognize these moments, the easier it becomes to trust our direction instead of constantly questioning every step.

Finding your purpose isn't about searching for perfect certainty.

It's about becoming increasingly aligned with your values, your strengths, and the person you want to become.

What Alignment Really Feels Like

Many people believe being on the right path means life becomes easy.

It doesn't.

Challenges still exist.

Unexpected obstacles still appear.

Doubt still visits from time to time.

Alignment isn't the absence of difficulty.

Alignment is the confidence that even your challenges are helping shape the person you're becoming.

For me, living in alignment creates two things:

Freedom.

Because I no longer feel like I have to become someone I'm not.

Happiness.

Because fulfillment comes from living authentically rather than chasing someone else's definition of success.

How to Start Finding Your Own Purpose

If you're wondering how to find your purpose, begin by paying attention to your everyday experiences.

Ask yourself:

  • What activities leave me feeling energized instead of drained?

  • What patterns continue showing up throughout my life?

  • When do I feel most like myself?

  • What values consistently guide my decisions?

  • What work feels meaningful even when it's difficult?

The answers rarely appear overnight.

They emerge through curiosity, reflection, and emotional awareness.

Every experience becomes another clue.

Continue Your Journey Toward Emotional Awareness

At Colbert's Corner Coaching & Consulting, I believe emotions are more than feelings to manage. They are information that can help us understand ourselves, make aligned decisions, and create lives rooted in purpose.

When we learn to recognize emotional patterns, reflect on our experiences, and align our actions with our values, we begin living with greater clarity, confidence, and fulfillment.

Nothing in my journey has happened exactly as I planned.

Yet every unexpected turn continues pointing me toward the life I was meant to build.

Maybe the same is true for you.

The question isn't whether your path is perfectly clear.

The question is whether you're becoming more of who you truly are with each step forward.

If you're ready to better understand your emotional patterns, clarify your purpose, and build a life aligned with your values, I'd love to help you begin that journey.
